International reaction to death of Bobby Sands
William Horsley reports on the international reaction to the death of IRA hunger striker and MP Bobby Sands.
In America, New York State governor Hugh Carey and New York Congressman Mario Biaggi were critical of the Thatcher government’s response, while Senator Edward Kennedy’s reaction was more muted.
Moscow’s Tass news agency described the Maze prison as a concentration camp. In Norway, the Queen was nearly hit by an object thrown by an IRA sympathiser. The European parliament is set to debate the crisis and the Vatican hopes Sands’ death will not provoke more violence.
