Visit of Papal envoy to Maze prison hunger strikers
Clive Ferguson reports on the visit of the papal envoy, Monsignor John Magee to the Maze prison where he spoke to republican prisoners on hunger strike. The report includes a short interview with Rosaleen Sands, mother of Bobby Sands, who declares her commitment to abide by his wish that she should not intervene when he falls into a coma.
Ferguson also reports that Monsignor Magee had arranged to meet the political wing of the UDA but could not make his appointment because he ran out of time. However, Monsignor Magee and Cardinal TomΓ΅s Γ“ Fiaich visited the family of UDR soldier Richard McKee killed in an ambush earlier in the week. They prayed beside the coffin and offered their condolences to the family.
Kate Adie reports on the funerals of lance-corporal McKee and RUC constable Gary Martin, both recent victims of terrorist attacks.
