Sculptures at the Gates of Bedlam

Alastair Sooke visits Bethlem Royal Hospital to see two sculptures that once adorned the gates of the old hospital known as Bedlam. Made by 17th Century sculptor Caius Gabriel Cibber, the figures represent 'melancholy' and 'raving' madness. Both the sculptures portray the hospital’s inmates with shaven heads and shackled to a straw mattress.
