March to motherhood
Down at depths of over 250m, a female lobster has lived out the winter months far away from the storms on the surface. Now the warmer temperatures trigger her to travel towards shallower water, often up to 150km away. It will take her a month to get to her favourite sand bank. The female lobster has been carrying around 20,000 fertilised eggs for the last seven months, and coming to the shallow warm waters will speed up their development. In another month's time the eggs begin to hatch, and in just a few hours the young have learned how to swim and travel off into the ocean.
