Following the eruption of a volcano in Columbia, which killed 20,000 people in one night, scientists threw themselves into understanding the strange and violent forces behind volcanic eruptions. This is the story of two scientists who each claimed they could predict eruptions. They used different methods to draw their conclusions and clashed over one particular volcano: one scientist said it was safe, the other that it was about to explode. What happened next would shatter reputations and destroy more lives.
