Carol and pollination ecologist, Dr Jeff Ollerton, pull apart the blooms of some favourite garden plants to reveal their structure and suitability for insect pollinators Many of our favourite double flowers are mutants and useless to our declining insect species, as the flower’s sexual parts have mutated into petals, leaving the flower unable to provide pollen and often very little or no nectar too.
