Landward: Drystane dykes

Drystane dykes are a common feature in the Scottish landscape but many are falling into disrepair. There is a shortage of skilled dry stane dykers. Full time dykers say that they can’t keep up with the demand and there’s a good living to be made. However apprentices rarely last through a winter, so how can the shortage be tackled?

On the other hand dykers services are very expensive and the majority of farmers can’t actually afford their skills. So does it mean the demise of the dyke? Euan attends a dyking course at the Scottish Traditional Skills Centre to find out.
