Landward: Northern Lighthouse Board

The Northern Lighthouse Board is responsible for maintaining the lighthouses and navigational buoys situated around more than 6000 miles of coastline. The upkeep of these navigational aids is a year round operation involving cleaning, painting and checking electrics.

Dougie Vipond joins the crew of one of the NLB’s two ships – the NLV Pole Star - as it carries out maintenance work on two buoys at Loch Linnhe and the Sound of Mull.
