Rare orchid
It seems orchids have very little sense of aesthetics when it comes to choosing a place to bloom. Of course when the Channel Tunnel was originally excavated there was a bit of a worry about what kind of terrain was going to be affected, but fortunately the White Cliffs Countryside Project have made sure that the flowers are safe, albeit in a slightly incongruous setting. Now this really is the piece de resistance round here. A very rare plant and very bizarre one with frankly inappropriate name. This is late spider orchid. Don’t worry about the late bit. There is an earlier one which was very earlier. It’s a bizarre flower, but does it really remind you of a spider? This plant really belongs in the Mediterranean area and there’s just a little sort of micro-climate in this dip here which is allowing it to flourish. Very rare, very beautiful.
