In the summer of 2007, Springwatch gave Nigel Jarrett of Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetland Trust a video camera to record what happened as he tried to raise common cranes from youngsters into future foster caring adults. One of the most important things is to raise the newly hatched chicks with adult cranes as their parents, they must not be allowed to imprint on humans as this will affect their development. For this the keepers must wear crane suits, to hide the human body shape, and use litter pickers adapted to look like adult crane heads to enable the keepers to feed the chicks. With the new litter pickers redesigned, it's time to see if the chicks will be convinced, and fortunately for all involved they accept the food offered first time. As the chicks grow they move into crane school where they are going to be taught what to eat, and what not to eat, and once they are a bit older, how to avoid predators.
