Cuckoo calling

In the forests around the edge of Loch Garten, cameraman Jamie Macpherson sets up his kit and listens for the cuckoos. As a way to get the cuckoo to come closer Jamie tries imitating their call. Very quickly this technique produces great results and a female appears on the trees nearby, clearly interested in the calls she can hear. In the background can be heard the insistent call of a resident male who’s clearly bothered by the competition. The female is then mobbed by chaffiches, quite a usual sight as it’s these smaller birds who might get parasitised by the cuckoo, if she lays her eggs in their nests. They try to force the large bird out of their territory. The male appears probably hoping to remove this new intruder from his territory and win back his mate, but Jamie is a bit too large for this bird to take on so he exits fast.
