Bird monument

Staple Island is one of the main seabird sanctuaries in the Farne Islands group. There are lots of guillemots, kittiwakes, shags and puffins nesting at the moment. Pinnacle Rocks is one of the most famous sites in the birding world - they are like bird monuments, crammed with guillemots. Bill spots a baby guillemot amidst the crowd of adults. He also sees a guillemot with a fish. Guillemots can only carry one sand eel at a time, but puffins can hold many in their beaks. This is because their mouths are specially hinged to be opened horizontally and can grip fish all along the length of their beak. Every time Bill visits, he feels the Farne Islands just get better and better.
