Seeing red

Brownsea Island is full of surprises including evidence of squirrels nibbling at pine cones. But these aren't greys, they are red squirrels. There is a healthy, small population on Brownsea. Bill Oddie goes to a place where they are easy to see - food has been put out for them, so he can drink his coffee and watch them through the window. They are small - about two thirds the size of a grey squirrel. They have incredibly long fingers. The squirrels have a bit of a scrap. They have a hyperactive life - nibble, nibble, nibble, sex, fight, nibble, nibble, nibble. They do completely exhaust themselves and indeed Bill spots one falling asleep up a tree, draped across a small branch that's gently waving in the breeze like a cradle.
