Uneggspected
On the previous day in Springwatch it seemed that the eggs on the little ringed plover nest had been abandoned by the mother and would almost certainly perish. But in true Springwatch style, a camera still poisitioned to look at the nest filmed the chicks hatching. It was an unusual sight as the eggs had been left for a long time, in cold conditions. Checking with the British Trust for Ornithology, they have confirmed it is not unusual for little ringed plovers to be brooding one set of eggs whilst also going off and laying another set. But the newly hatched chick, although he seems to have an independent spirit, doesn't look very strong. He's quite wobbly which may be a sign that he hasn't faired well in the egg after all. The mother continues to brood the remaining eggs.
