Devoted couple
Undisturbed by people, a pair of ravens build their nest in an oak's upper branches. Ravens breed very early in the year, perhaps because they are scavengers and actually benefit from hard times. They mate for life and can live for over 20 years. The reason they need a faithful partnership is because a large brood of hungry babies would be far too much work for a single parent. And by mid-March their nest is full of exuberant chicks all demanding attention. The ravens' nest is huge as the parent birds have bred here for many years, adding on new layers every spring. But by early summer the ravens have gone.
