A cricket thinks it's on a white orchid, but it is actually on a mantis that has evolved to look like an orchid. The mantis grabs it. Other hunting strategies are even more bizarre. Over millennia the snapping turtle’s efforts to reel in a fish have made its tongue look like a juicy worm, attracting unsuspecting fish. But sometimes more subtle tactics may be needed. Portia jumping spiders, for example, are one of the world’s smallest assassins but they hunt much larger web spiders. This Portia might be tiny, but she has a big appetite. A first, direct approach is thwarted when her target just shakes its web and forces her to retreat, but she has evolved a Plan B. She slowly lowers herself within striking range then leaps and bites, leaving the poison from her tiny fangs to do the rest. The Portia spider may be small, but she is as deadly as they come.
