Wake up call

In Delhi, a sting organised by wildlife protection charities targeted large, organised animal product smuggling groups and led to the recovery of almost 300 kilos of tiger bones - the biggest haul in India's history at the time. The scale of the seizure, shocked the world. The bones' secret destination was China. There, heavy demand for ingredients for traditional medicine had almost wiped out tigers and India was a new and untapped source. The recovered bones represented some 24 tigers. Whilst the big fish in the smuggling operation, Sansa Chand, slipped through the net, a Tibetan accomplice was arrested. He stated that within 30 days he could produce a further 1,000 kilos of bones, the remains of at least 80 more tigers. On Project Tiger's 20th birthday this news should have been a shocking wake up call.
