Seal rivals

After a hard night's foraging a female harbour seal is sleeping in the dense eel grass which grows between the kelp forests and the shore. But a male has other ideas, since in June they begin their strange mating displays. By listening to each other's low guttural calls, they can establish dominance. If they are evenly matched they can sometimes come to blows, but this early in the season they are just sizing each other up.
