Sat nav elephant
What better way to map elephant highways than recruiting an old elephant to do the work? A large bull from a bachelor herd is shot with an anaesthetic dart and fitted with a collar which carries a GPS tracker. Scientist Mike Chase is certain that this bull is old enough to have used and remember the ancestral routes to and from Angola and so could lead others back there. More than 50 elephants have been collared in this way. This bull is named Ntombo by the scientists. It is hoped that the data he will send back will help elephants and people to live peacefully together. As Ntombo heads north towards the Angolan wilderness, Mike can only hope that eventually a thousand elephants will follow in his footsteps.
