Manky chicks
The greenfinch family nest caused some controversy between Springwatch's Kate Humble and Chris Packham. Adult birds usually remove the faecal sacs of the chicks in the nest depositing them away from the nest, and in so doing keep the nest clean and free from disease.
However, this year's family seemed less than house proud, leaving piles of faecal sacs to collect around the edge of the nest, a far cry from last year's superior house keeping. Chris points out that as long as the birds are able to fledge, then that's all that really matters.
