The ants nests in the Cerrado are often underground, so even with their 50cm-long tongues anteaters find it simpler to turn to termites. However, soldier termites spring instantly to defence of the termite mound, and get right up the anteaters nose with bites and irritant sprays. The anteaters have to move fast, rarely spending more than a minute at each mound. The trail of destruction is soon repaired by the soldiers to keep other predators out and retain the mound's air conditioning properties.
