Episode 7
Rhona and Nikki need to raise money to trace their family tree. Auctioneer JB offers support and advice, and restorer JJ Chalmers tackles a valuable bear.
Mother and daughter Rhona and Nikki moved in together, bringing two households' worth of items under one roof. Their house is full of antiques, items that their Swiss family have passed down through the generations. Now they want to trace their family heritage, but to fund the trip to Switzerland, they want to sell some of their Swiss antiques.
The recent passing of Rhona's 57-year-old son Grahame has motivated the trip. His research into their family tree has inspired his sister Nikki to find out more. Grahame, a keen collector of motorbike racing memorabilia, has also left behind items worthy of being auctioned. His hundreds of pop records include some rare vinyl LPs, which are likely to spark fierce bidding among collectors.
Auctioneer JB uncovers treasured pieces that have been in Rhona’s family for decades, including two black forest bear carvings and a larger, carved bear that once belonged to Rhona’s great-grandfather. Although some items are damaged, restorer JJ Chalmers has the skills and tools to repair them. Using his creative talents, some glue and elastic bands, he fixes a wonky mahogany table and gives Rhona’s carved bear the TLC it needs ahead of the auction.
On auction day, the pressure is on JB to make as much as he can for Rhona and Nikki because trips to Switzerland, Europe’s most expensive country, do not come cheap.
