A European Journey

A trip around Europe featuring celebrated writers and composers from the continent, as well as visitors including Sidney Bechet, Jessica Mitford and Audrey Hepburn's Roman Holiday.

We visit Paris in the company of Zola, Seville with Lorca, and a tiny Finnish island with Tove Jansson. There鈥檚 music based on Bulgarian folklore; Dobrinka Tabakova's Spinning a Yarn, Mendelssohn鈥檚 yodelling-inspired String Symphony No. 9 and Liszt鈥檚 settings of Petrarchan sonnets. And we鈥檙e also hearing from those inspired by their journeys to Europe; memoirs by Jessica Mitford and Sidney Bechet, poets taking what became known in the eighteenth century the Grand Tour as well as fictional journeys in Roman Holiday and Room with a View, aided by the guidebooks of Karl Baedeker. As we tour, we admire the landscape with Beethoven鈥檚 Pastoral Symphony set alongside the contemporary writer Teju Cole鈥檚 Swiss travelogue. We鈥檙e in the towns and cities, lakes and mountains, and we couldn鈥檛 resist a nod to Eurovision.

The readers are Juliet Stevenson and Parth Thakerer and the programme ends a week in which Radio 3's Roadtrip has visited 5 European cities.
