Reverend Tom Ebbens, Royal Navy, reflects from Faslane Submarine Base, Scotland, on the historic and enduring relationship our armed forces have with faith and war.

Tom explores his own faith journey, what drew him to believe and, ultimately, to serve. He explains what it’s like to work as a chaplain in one of the most protected and secure places on earth.

Inside the base, he shows us the special chapel and the plaque that displays the Polaris Prayer, written by the captain of Britain’s first ballistic submarine to accompany its first voyage. It’s poignant and moving as the words echo through the ages.

He also reflects on this wild and beautiful loch location and the lasting relationship this rugged west coastline has had with Christianity. Not too far north west, St Columba established his monastery on Iona in 563AD and from there spread the holy word across Scotland. He explains why and how the Royal Navy chose this spot to set up the UK’s nuclear deterrent base.
