Elizabeth Alker introduces a complete performance of Handel's Messiah featuring a starry line-up of soloists alongside the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and six different choirs directed by John Butt at this year's Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms.
After a shaky start in Dublin 300 years ago Handel's masterly oratorio has become one of the best loved and most frequently performed choral works in the repertory - and a firm Christmas favourite. This performance, featuring the 1789 re-orchestration by Mozart, complete with trombones, clarinets, horns and flutes, was made at this year's Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms as part of 'Choral Day' and it captures all the joy and public affection that this great work inspires.
