Winter Solstice with Shovel Dance Collective
Verity Sharp with songs for sonically-adventurous souls on the eve of the winter solstice including sounds from folk experimenters Shovel Dance Collectiveβs recent set at Cafe Oto.
Verity Sharp shares songs for sonically-adventurous souls on the eve of the winter solstice, with the help of nine-piece experimental folk outfit Shovel Dance Collective. Alongside exclusive excerpts from their recent sold-out three day residency at Londonβs Cafe Oto, the collective offer choice selections for a winter solstice playlist.
Formed in 2019, Shovel Dance Collectiveβs members unite around a shared love of folk musicβs power to transport and connect, its ability to βplace you in a great chain of everyday lifeβ, forging intimate connections with βpolitical and emotional actions, past and present.β Their two albums mine folk archives, bringing to light ballads and songs which hold queer histories, proto-feminist narratives, and the voices of working people; whilst their EP series Offcuts and Oddities assemble unfinished moments, cassette tape experiments and field recordings from spaces around England, including church pews, fields, and Londonβs canal-sides.
Elsewhere in the show, Verity marks the eve of the longest night of the year, holding vigil through the dark with tracks from BjΓΆrk, Felicia Atkinson and Rosalie Sorrels.
