Tom meets the pianist Nikolai Lugansky

Tom Service is joined live in the studio by pianist Nikolai Lugansky, playing Mendelssohn and Wagner, and he talks to Paul McCreesh about his youth choir project, Gabrieli Roar.

Tom Service with a sparkling mix of music for Saturday morning, including pieces by Respighi, Vaughan Williams, Heloise Werner and Beethoven, plus Vivaldi's Winter in a new arrangement for Norwegian hardanger fiddle. He's joined in the studio by pianist Nikolai Lugansky who plays Mendelssohn and Wagner live and talks to Tom about his lifelong love of Wagner's music, having played his own piano transcriptions from the orchestral scores when he was still a teenager.

As the world looks to Paris this weekend and the reopening of Notre Dame cathedral five years after it was devastated by fire, Tom talks to organist Olivier Latry about how the organ survived and the work that has gone into cleaning and rebuilding the instrument ready for the "awakening of the organ" during the opening ceremony. We also hear from Stephanie Duchêne, a conservation scientist who worked on the restoration of Notre Dame and has created the 'Compagnons Choir' with dozens of colleagues involved in bringing the cathedral back to life, from engineers to scaffolders and architects.

Plus we hear about the programme of music-making for young people called Gabrieli Roar, led by the Gabrieli Consort and their Artistic Director Paul McCreesh. This month, 4000 young singers perform alongside the Gabrieli Consort in cathedrals across England as part of their Grand Georgian Christmas tour. Tom catches up with Paul to find out the story behind the music and why he believes that singing is the key to introducing young people to classical music and culture.
