'I canβt believe thatβs what a saw doctor is!'
Alan from Carryduff recalls his father working at the saw doctor's.
βYou mentioned yesterday Scott had stoked the boiler and it was nice and warm,β says Alan in Carryduff. βWell I remember my father had a business in Belfast with a workshop up above with eight saw doctors in it who sharpened tools.β
βI never knew that was what a saw doctor was!β says Sean.
βIn the workshop when I called in they had a pot belly cast iron stove, and the saw doctors lit it and the bottom of it glowed white and red, and the coal man carried the sacks of coke up the stairs! Coke was a by product of the gasworks... the river past the gasworks in Belfast would run fluorescent green!β
With music from Manfred Mann, The Everly Brothers, Eric Clapton and more.
