A review of new Hugh Grant film Heretic, poet Amy Jo Philip on how God helped her celebrate her gender identity. Plus the US elections, and how we can all avoid shouting.

Last week, Hugh Grant’s new film Heretic hit the big screen. The story follows two young Mormon missionaries who enter the home of a seemingly mild-mannered man but are forced into a cat-and-mouse game that tests the very core of their faith. Tony is joined by academic Linden Bickett to discuss the themes raised by the film.

As the US election polling day looms closer, Jordan Dunbar of the Â鶹ԼÅÄ World Service’s Climate Question podcast reports from the swing state of Georgia on how faith groups are assessing the candidates on their approach to climate change.

Discussing her Spiritual Life this week is Scottish poet Amy Jo Philip, who is the first transgender priest in the Scottish Episcopal Church. She shares how her relationship with God helped her accept every part of herself and celebrate her gender identity and why she’s building a community for other Queer Christians in central Scotland.

For the second hour, Tony is joined by anthropologist and psychotherapist Salma Siddique, Quaker and author Alastair McIntosh and theologian and ethicist Jared Stacy to explore some of the stories in the headlines.

The US elections are at the forefront of many people’s minds, with Tuesday’s vote looming. Many religious groups have been wrestling with how to cast their vote, with many supposedly set to avoid the ballot box altogether. We’ll explore exactly how faith might affect voting in one of the most hotly contested races to the White House in years.

Following Labour’s first budget in 14 years, we’ll look at the role tax has played through the ages, and how faith might shape ideas of the pros and cons of paying into the collective pot.

And how do we handle our temper? We all lose the rag once in a while – but ahead of World Let’s Stop Shouting Day, how can we examine our relationship with shouting and find better ways to communicate, both with those around us and in the realms of social media?
