Murderers, Messages and the Breakfast Killer
In a case of mistaken identity, a man is stabbed to death. An intelligence analyst helps convict the killers, and a trace evidence expert helps find the weapon used to kill a teenager.
In this episode, we take a look at how phone data can unlock a case and provide a solid link between the suspects and a horrific murder.
In early 2023, emergency call handlers received a distressing call from Mark Noke, a 64-year-old man who had been stabbed by a gang at his Southampton flat. Mark later died from his injuries, leading Hampshire Police to launch their biggest-ever murder investigation. Police struggled to identify any motive for Mark’s murder or any potential suspects. A breakthrough came when a source provided the names of the murder suspects. The investigation team called in higher intelligence analyst Julie Sargeant to sift through a mass of telephone evidence to work out just what happened on the night of Mark’s death and build a case that would eventually find five men guilty of Mark’s murder. With emotional testimony from Mark’s niece Jade Bedford and fascinating revelations from lead detective Robert Munro.
In our next story, when south Wales teenager Rebecca Aylward is found with fatal blunt force trauma injuries in a forest near Bridgend, the initial police investigation focused on confirming exactly what weapon was used to kill her. A search of the area uncovered a heavy rock that investigators believed could have delivered the fatal blow. Rebecca’s ex-boyfriend, 16-year-old Josh Davies, is soon suspected of involvement despite his denials. Dr Sarah Jacob is asked to analyse the rock and is able to provide a direct forensic link between Davies and the murder weapon.
