Ultra Lounge Concert: Henry Mancini and Beyond
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Concert Orchestra with conductor Edwin Outwater with special guests celebrate the music of composer Henry Mancini and his Space Age Pop contemporaries.
Mel Giedroyc hosts Radio 2’s final visit to this year’s Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Tonight’s concert celebrates the exotic and sophisticated sounds that sprang forth in the 1950’s and 60’s from composers such as Les Baxter, Juan Garcia Esquivel, Julius Wechter, Burt Bacharach and, most importantly of all, Henry Mancini. Born 100 years ago, Hank Mancini’s music came to define what we know these days as Ultra Lounge or Space Age Pop. His Oscar and Grammy winning scores for movies, including Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Pink Panther, The Days of Wine and Roses, and Two For The Road and dozens more, helped cement his reputation as one of the all-time greats in the world of film composition.
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Concert Orchestra, led by their principal guest conductor Edwin Outwater, perform titles including Peter Gunn, Baby Elephant Walk, Moon River, The Pink Panther Theme, Quincy Jones’ Soul Bossa Nova, Alfie, A Taste of Honey, The Windmills of Your Mind and What’s New Pussycat? Featuring guest vocalists Rachel John, Oliver Tompsett and Henry Mancini’s daughter, Monica Mancini.
