Ground and grass
Ground and grass focus in Ballyvoy, saving sealife, butterfly crisis, fishing for schools and nature-friendly farming in Cookstown.
Presenter, Nicola Weir, travels to Ballyvoy just outside Ballycastle to speak to beef farmer, Dr Réamaà Mathers, about keeping traditional breeds and making the best use of his species rich grassland at his 40 acre farm. Matt Lundy from Ulster Wildlife and Jonathan Houghton from Queen’s University Belfast are in studio to talk about a new Department of Agriculture and Environment strategy to tackle the declining populations of sealife predators and seabirds. The nature theme continues as Rose Cremin from Butterfly Conservation tells Nicola about a worrying decline in the numbers of butterflies in Northern Ireland and the threat to their long term existence. It’s also gone fishing for local schoolchildren as they get involved in the Fishing for Schools project which encourages young people to learn a new skill while enjoying nature. And it’s off to Cookstown to speak to Northern Ireland’s latest Nature Friendly Farming Ambassador, Brendan Neeson, at his 30 acre Creeve Cottage Farm.
