John Toal presents The Living Air, a special Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Invitation concert from St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast to mark 100 years of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ services in Northern Ireland.

The concert features music from the Ulster Orchestra, with conductor James Burton, the Codetta choir and the cathedral’s organist, Jack Wilson.

The concert includes a new Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔNI centenary commission from Neil Martin, Paul Campbell’s Fantasia on Ulster Airs, and a special arrangement of A Candle Which Will Not be Put Out by Public Service Broadcasting.

Tara Mills and Declan Harvey will perform a series of readings that reflect different aspects of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s history and role in community life. These include pieces by Ciaran Carson, Wendy Cope, Gillian Clarke, Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley.

The concert will be followed by a conversation with composer, writer and broadcaster David Byers. He’ll be reflecting on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s contribution to music-making in Northern Ireland, including its role in supporting orchestral music, and some of the pieces that Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ listeners would have heard on their wireless sets when local broadcasting began in 1924.
