Britain's Rarest Creatures
Joe Crowley is on the lookout for some of the UK’s most elusive animals at Thursley National Nature Reserve in Surrey, one of the largest remaining areas of heathland.
The British countryside is home to an abundance of rare creatures, and to catch a glimpse of animals such as a red squirrel, a hazel dormouse or a roseate tern is always a treat.
Joe Crowley is on the lookout for some of the UK’s most elusive animals at Thursley National Nature Reserve in Surrey. The reserve is one of the largest remaining areas of heathland, itself a rare habitat, and home to some of the country's most endangered wildlife. Joe is searching for six scarce reptiles, learning about their numbers, biology and habitat.
As the sun sets on the reserve, Joe hopes to see and hear the rare nightjar when he joins a group of volunteers to survey their numbers. Plus a dive into the Countryfile archives for past encounters with some of Britain's most treasured wildlife.
