America’s global superstar Noah Lyles is the reigning world champion and the man to beat. British hopeful Zharnel Hughes will seek to exorcise the memory of his disqualification at Tokyo 2020, while Botswana’s world silver medallist Letsile Tebogo is another strong contender.
World-class sprinting will also take place in the pool, with the British men looking to claim a podium place for a second successive Games in the 4x100m medley final. Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom is the favourite for gold in the women’s 50m freestyle, and in the longest race of the night, the USA’s Bobby Finke will face a stiff challenge from Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen for the men’s 1,500m freestyle title.
