Sir Mark Elder, conductor
The entire HalleΜ family visits from Manchester to make history at the Proms, as Sir Mark Elder comes to the end of his last season as Music Director after a quarter of a century in the role. First heard in Cincinnati last year, Sir James MacMillanβs Timotheus, Bacchus and Cecilia is a celebration of musicβs ability to move the soul, and unites choirs of children and adults with a huge orchestra as it moves from jubilation to serenity. The evening concludes with the symphony that changed Gustav Mahlerβs creative direction β the great outpouring of defiance, exasperation and all-embracing love that is his Symphony No. 5.
