Live from Tynemouth

Radio 3 Breakfast concludes its journey through the north east of England at Tynemouth Priory and Castle - high up on a dramatic headland, overlooking the River Tyne as it enters the North Sea.

Because of its strategic position, places of worship over the centuries have co-existed here with fortifications. Petroc wanders around the ruins of the 11th-century priory, the Gatehouse, and the former gun batteries pointing out to sea. He hears about navigation along the Tyne, its bridges, and the industry of Newcastle and Gateshead; and Kathryn Tickell, foremost exponent of the Northumbrian pipes, plays live - taking listeners on a musical journey up the Tyne, ready for the 鶹Լ Proms weekend from The Glasshouse in Gateshead.
