John Greig

Episode 6 of 6

How John Greig led Rangers to European glory, becoming 'the greatest ever Ranger.'

Growing up in Edinburgh, John Greig dreamed of lining up for his beloved Hearts. However, having been rejected by the Tynecastle side, he was given the opportunity to make a career in football with Rangers.
His performances in the reserves led him to a first team spot at just 18, before manager Willie Waddle was so impressed that, at just 22 years old, Greig became club captain.

Greig led Rangers through league and cup triumphs, as well as some of their toughest times following the tragic events of the Ibrox disaster in 1971. After making 755 appearances for the club and scoring 120 goals across his career, his finest hour came on the 24 May 1972, when Rangers defeated Dynamo Moscow in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in Barcelona. He is the only man to lift a European trophy for the club and was voted by the supporters as 'the greatest ever Ranger.'

Featuring contributions from Colin Stein, James Tavernier, Archie Macpherson, Jim Craig, Chick Young, Andy Cameron, Willie Johnston, Kaitlin Greig and Peter McCloy.
