Autocycle

Episode 8 of 30

Nigel Havers presides as five sellers aim to get the best price for their items, including a wash tub, an autocycle, a Rowntree’s advertising sign, a Victorian glass ship and a rocking horse.

Nigel Havers welcomes sellers of collectibles and curiosities to the Bidding Room's home in Edinburgh, where they attempt to ply their wares to five dealers.

First to march her way into the room is Donna from Essex, with a military campaign tub with a lockable lid. Dating back to the 1890s, it’s been stored in Donna’s family loft for years, and the time has come to send it on its next adventure amongst the dealers. Can Donna rinse them of all their cash and get a good price for her historic piece of militaria?

Next in is Julie, ready to 'pedal' her 1950s New Hudson autocycle to the dealers. She’s owned it for 18 months, and extensive restoration by her husband has brought the bike back to its former glory. The petrol-powered bike should get the dealers revved up, but their bids will need to be well fuelled if they want to get Julie the right price for it.

Third to arrive at Edinburgh HQ is Tim, with an enamel sign that’s been with him for 50 years. The Victorian-era Rowntree’s pastilles sign should sweeten up the dealers, but will their bids be enough to give the sign a new home, sweet home?

Sailing in next is Sue from Lincoln, with a treasured piece that is causing her concern. The extremely fragile glass ship, known as a frigger, was inherited from Sue’s great-uncle and this Victorian hand-crafted piece needs a new, very careful owner. Will any of the dealers be brave enough to bid on an antique that has survived two world wars?

Finally, it’s the turn of Bianca, with her son, four-year-old Elias. They’ve brought along a Mobo rocking horse that Elias and his three brothers have outgrown and which is now taking up too much space in Bianca’s busy house. They’re hoping the dealers will giddy-up for the horse and help the family raise some money for new toys.

The dealers today are Ian, Viki, Adi, Jacqui, Jo and JB.
