Episode 8

The dangers of home dental kits, how to be healthy in old age and the latest on painful mesh implants.

Incontinence and pelvic prolapses can be debilitating conditions, and so for many women, the offer of a surgical mesh cure, available on the NHS, was a lifeline. But in many cases, the supposed solution has made things much worse. Norma from Scotland had mesh surgery to help fix her prolapsed bladder after childbirth but ended up in extraordinary pain and was forced into early retirement. Urological surgeon Professor Hashim Hashim explains why the practice has been suspended altogether in some parts of the country, and how women can get a reversal operation if they need it.

The Brit now has a life expectancy of 80,9 years. We live three years more than the average American and three years less than Australians. It’s a pretty good ranking, though wouldn't it be even better if we could live not just longer, but healthier lives? Dr Richard Siow, director of ageing research at King’s College London, has tips on how to live a healthier and longer life.

When it comes to smiling, some people are embarrassed by the look of their teeth. There’s been a big increase in the number of people getting braces to straighten teeth, which has led to a rise in cheap deals. Bridie found a deal online that seemed too good to be true. And it was. Now living with permanent pain, Bridie has been told it will cost at least £7,500 to correct the problems she has with her teeth. Cosmetic dental specialist Dr Rhona Eskander explains the dangers of using home dental kits.
