Weather Warning

Episode 1 of 12

A young hiker gets trapped on an icy ledge on Tryfan, rescuers hunt for walkers lost in fog and a man risks heatstroke after a mountain climb on the hottest day of the year.

Saving lives in a place like no other takes an emergency response like no other. That’s the reality in Eryri, also known as Snowdonia, where epic mountain ranges and dense forests sit alongside miles of coastline. This part of north Wales also attracts millions of tourists. But whether it’s a local or first-time visitor in danger, more than 17 dedicated local emergency and rescue teams are poised and ready to join forces to help.

On a snowy day, a young solo hiker is drawn to the iconic Tryfan mountain which, under a blanket of white, looks like something from a film. But he finds himself trapped on an icy ledge in sub-zero conditions with vertical drops on every side. Police, mountain rescue and coastguard helicopter respond but the hiker’s precarious spot means winching him off is too risky and the teams need a plan before darkness falls.

The weather also ramps ups the challenge when two walkers get lost on Glyder Fach in fog so dense you can’t see more than 20m ahead. A father and son duo are among the mountain rescue team trying to find them despite the conditions and a lost radio signal.

On the hottest day of the year, a dad collapses with heat exhaustion near the summit of the highest mountain in southern Eryri. It’s a race against time to cool him down before he tips into heatstroke – a life-threatening condition. Can mountain rescue reach him fast enough without risking their own safety?
