Trent Valley

Margherita Taylor and Matt Baker head to the Trent Valley, where over the past two centuries, industrialisation along the UK’s third largest river - the river Trent - has taken its toll on the landscape. Mining, agriculture and increased development have all lead to the loss of vital habitats. However, with the conclusion of a major transformation project, the area is now recovering and welcoming back wildlife.

Margherita and Matt meet the people working to restore these habitats and encouraging wildlife to thrive across Trent Valley and beyond. Margherita sees how nature’s engineers, beavers, are transforming a lake within the valley, and she also joins a group of volunteers helping toads to cross the road. Matt helps save one of the UK’s rarest trees, the black poplar, and we see how an ancient church has stood the test of time. Adam Henson looks into a deadly livestock disease that is affecting farms across the country.
