Beatha Dhiomhair nan Roin - The Secret Life of Seals

With a streamlined body, it glides effortlessly through the water and is a deadly hunter. But do we really know the grey seal?

A dive right into the world of the seal. We are there when it's born, when the white pup sheds its fluff and has the first swimming lesson, and with the mother as the males compete for her attention. Most importantly we follow the seal underwater to its hidden domain. The programme observes how it co-operates, detects and hunts its prey and relates to its greatest enemy - man.

After being on the brink of extinction in the Baltic Sea, the population has recovered and is once again a common sight in the Stockholm archipelago. Even if we know this is a highly intelligent, cute and adaptable animal, there is much that remains a mystery. How does the seal detect and locate is prey in the pitch dark water at 100 meters below the surface of the Baltic? How is it adapting to an environment in rapid change? How does it live life on the sea ice?

Ann an Beatha Dhìomhair nan Ròin thèid sinn a shaoghal nan ròn. Chì sinn iad gam breith, nuair a chailleas an cuilean geal an fhionnadh 's a thèid e a shnàmh, is na cullaich a' strì airson a mhàthair. Nas cudromaiche, leanaidh sinn an ròn dhan tìr dhìomhair fon uisge. Chì sinn mar a bhios iad ag obair còmhla, a' lorg 's a' sealg creach agus a' dèiligeadh rin dubh-nàmhaid – mac an duine.

Às dèidh a bhith ann an cunnart dol à bith sa Mhuir Bhaltach, chaidh an ròn am feabhas is tha iad a-nise pailt ann an innis-mhuir Stockholm. Ged a shaoileadh sinn gun aithne dhuinn an creutair ciallach, àlainn, seòlta seo, 's iomadh rùn dìomhair a th' ann mun deidhinn. Ciamar a gheibh ròn lorg air creach san dorchadas aig doimhne 100 meatair fon uachdair sa Bhaltaig? Ciamar a tha iad a' cleachdadh ri caochlaideachd na h-àrainneachd? Ciamar a bhios e a' tighinn beò air an deigh-mhara?
