with Cathy Macdonald

Zara Janjua hears about the humanitarian efforts in Morocco and Libya, the Jewish Festival of Yom Kippur and the role religion plays in horror movies.

With North Africa seeing two humanitarian disasters in recent weeks, in Libya and in Morocco, Cathy Macdonald speaks to Islamic Relief’s Salah Aboulgasem and writer Alice Morrison for the latest on what is happening on the ground.

It’s a special week for Jewish people around the world, as they have just marked Rosh Hashanah and are now getting ready for Yom Kippur. Professor Joe Goldblatt, chair of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association, tells Cathy what’s involved.

While some noises set us on edge, others can soothe or even instantly transport us to a different time in life. Author of Sounds Like Misophonia, Dr Jane Gregory, and sound artist and musician, Lomond Campbell, explore the various ways in which sound affects us.

Putting Ourselves in the Picture is a new exhibition at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, highlighting and celebrating the contribution made by those who have come to call Scotland home. Nazek Ramadan from Migrant Voice, the charity behind the exhibition, and Twimukye Mushaka, whose photograph is one of those featured, explain its importance.

Ahead of his appearance at the Wayword festival in Aberdeen, Edinburgh based Latinx poet, AndrΓ©s N. Ordorica, speaks to Cathy about belonging and home, faith and family, identity and queerness; themes which appear in his poetry collection, At Least This I Know.

And as The Exorcist marks its 50th anniversary this year, two Horror fans, psychologist Kirsty Craig-Colquhoun, and Luke Devlin, a member of the Catholic Worker Movement, discuss why the genre leans so heavily on religious symbols and themes.
