Young Trad Semi-Finalists & Clare Johnston: Call of the Mountains

Anna reveals the 12 semi-finalists of the Young Trad competition & composer Clare Johnston talks about a unique collaboration featuring iPads & traditional Kazakh instruments.

The Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year competition is gathering pace with the semi-final coming up in October. Anna reveals the lucky 12 young musicians who've earned a place in the semi-final this year.

Plus, Queen's Hall in Edinburgh will host the world premiere of 'Call of the Mountains' by Scottish-based Clare Johnston this weekend - a piece is written for a unique ensemble featuring iPads and laptops alongside traditional Kazakh and other more familiar orchestral instruments. Featuring the Eegeru Ensemble - trailblazers in their use of traditional Kazakh instruments - this new work broadens the ensemble with cutting-edge technology and digital instruments including iPads performed by Drake Music Scotland’s iPad Lab. Anna caught up with Clare in Edinburgh to learn about the project.
