Britpop Forever - Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley reunite for a special edition of the Evening Session, as we celebrate 30 years since Britpop.
Back in the 90's, Steve and Jo hosted the most influential music programme of the era - Radio 1's Evening Session. Today, as part of 6 Music's Britpop Forever season, they reunite to celebrate 30 years since the start of the scene. Britpop was the last hurrah for the music industry before it was changed forever by the emergence of the internet. As co-hosts of Radio 1’s legendary Evening Session, Steve and Jo were there, in the middle of all of it.
Joining Steve and Jo will be Tim Wheeler from Ash and Louise Wener from Sleeper to discuss their experiences of Britpop: what was great and not so great about the 90's and also how both of their bands have come out the other side to still be producing brilliant new music and playing to huge audiences. We’ll also hear from writer and storyteller John Osborne about his new show β€The New Blur Albumβ€, which follows John’s love of the band, forged from hearing them on the Evening Session.
Also, actor Susie Riddell, who plays Tracy Horrobin in the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ series The Archers, joins us to tell her about her love of Britpop and the music she listened to back in the 90s.
Then, in the final hour of the programme, Steve looks back at the events of 1996 as we follow Oasis, who dominated the awards shows that year, sweeping the board at both The Brits and the Brats before going on to play 2 massive nights at Knebworth in what can be called the era's defining gigs. Alongside all this, Jarvis Cocker is arrested for storming Michael Jackson's performance at the Brit Awards, Suede return with their Coming Up album and there are some seminal albums released from The Manic Street Preachers, Ash and The Prodigy.
To wrap things up, we repeat 30 minutes from the previously mentioned Knebworth shows from Oasis.
