with Zara Janjua
Two hours of music and conversation with a faith and ethical perspective. Taking the week's events to ask what they say about our values and beliefs.
There are increasing calls from care experienced people to see those experiences enshrined in law as a protected characteristic. Zara hears about some of the challenges and discriminations from two people who are care experienced; writer Alan Dapre and Megan Moffat from Who Cares Scotland.
In our occasional series on Sacred Spaces, The Very Reverend Dr Iain Greenshields, former moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, takes us to a place he cherishes, St Margaret’s Community Church in Dunfermline.
Despite the recent troubles in Israel, there are still small community projects working hard to bring Jewish and Arab communities together. Zara hears from the Rev Muriel Pearson of St Andrew’s Jerusalem and Tiberias Church about one project partnered by the Church of Scotland that is building bridges through the production of olive oil.
During the pandemic, when organised religion failed to bring Afghani-British journalist Nelufar Hedayat any solace, she set out on a psychological and physical journey to find healing and wellness through the exploration of rituals. Nelufar joins Zara to discuss what she learnt about living the ritual life.
The recent fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy of Algerian descent in France recently set off a wave of rage and violent protest. The events have brought into question the subject of multiculturalism and how to make an equitable society for all. Zara reflects on the differing approaches to multiculturalism between France and here in the UK with French Algerian journalist Nabila Ramdani and Nasar Meer, Professor of Sociology at the University of Edinburgh.
Roger McGough has been called The Patron Saint of Poetry and his talents as a wordsmith have endeared him to many. He joins Zara to discuss his recently published updated version of the Noah’s Ark Bible story and to expand on the role religion has played in his life and work.
It’s an existence that few of us could contemplate but Ken Smith has spent the past forty years in an isolated part of the Highlands living alone in a log cabin with no electricity or running water. Now, the so-called Hermit Of Treig has released an autobiography titled The Way Of The Hermit, assisted by writer and traveller Will Millard. Will sits down with Zara to reflect on Ken’s remarkable existence and to discuss the various isolated communities Will has visited as an explorer and filmmaker.
