Britpop Forever: 1994

Steve Lamacq chronicles the events in Britpop in 1994, including Elastica releasing a brace of classic singles, the rise of Oasis, and the death of Kurt Cobain.

Steve Lamacq celebrates 30 years of Britpop by chronicling the events and moments of the movement during 1994.

The 30th anniversary of Britpop gives us the unique opportunity to tell some of the greatest stories in pop history during such a pivotal moment in British culture. Britpop was the last hurrah for the music industry before it was changed forever by the emergence of the internet. As co-host of Radio 1’s legendary Evening Session, Steve Lamacq was there, in the middle of all of it.

In this programme, we follow Elastica, who released a brace of classic singles during 1994 and graced a number of music magazines. We also hear about the rise of Oasis, from their demo being played on the Evening Session at the start of the year to the release of their debut album – Definitely Maybe - in August, which went on to became the fastest-selling debut album in the UK at the time.

1994 also saw Pulp finally tasting success as their single Do You Remember the First Time hits the top 40, Blur release the seminal Britpop album Parklife in April, and the death of Kurt Cobain signals a passing of the baton from Grunge to Britpop.

Then, in the final part of the programme, Steve repeats Elastica's stunning 1994 Brighton Rock show, recorded for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1 at the Zap Club in Brighton on September 6th 1994.
