London Brew and Ahmad Jamal Tribute
Producer Martin Terefe on his Miles Davis-inspired project London Brew, plus Jamie plays tribute to Ahmad Jamal.
In 1970, Miles Davis, not content with having led two of the most important jazz groups of all time, was in the middle of a particularly productive period. Out of an experimental way of working, with long recorded jam sessions full of electric instruments being edited down into tracks, came his classic album Bitches Brew.
Now, over a half century on, comes the record London Brew - a project featuring leading UK musicians like Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings, which takes inspiration from Davis' record and way of working to create something new. Producer and guitarist Martin Terefe talks about how the project came together.
Also this week, the sad news came in of piano great Ahmad Jamal's passing at the age of 92. Jamie pays tribute to the legend of jazz and plays an extract of their conversation, recorded for this show back in 2013.
