UK rising star Cherise is Jamie's guest for the first of three tributes to Nina Simone. She performs a special version of I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free at Maida Vale.
In the year singer, songwriter, pianist, activist and 20th-century musical icon Nina Simone would have turned 90 years old, Jamie celebrates her legacy with the help of his favourite contemporary singers.
UK rising star Cherise kicks off this first of three tribute shows. She talks about first encountering Nina Simone's music before performing a special acapella version of I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Maida Vale studios. We also hear a clip of an archive interview from 1968 and a couple more of Nina's classic songs.
Plus, there's new music from Bokani Dyer, Nick Walters and Eje Eje, alongside gems from Freddie Redd, Roy Hargrove and Blue Mitchell.
